I wanted to update you on some of the area district softball tournaments.

And you might be surprised by some of the results, because I sure was.

Here are a few eye-poppers:

In the Sea-King 3A Tournament, Mount Si handed No. 3 Bainbridge its first loss of the season, 6-3. The semifinals are an all-KingCo affair: No. 1 Juanita vs. Liberty and Mount Si vs. Lake Washington. All four are assured of state berths. There is just one more state spot up for grabs between Bainbridge, Holy Names, Bishop Blanchet and Nathan Hale.

In the Northwest 4A District Tournament, Marysville-Pilchuck and Monroe play today for the title and both are moving on to state. M-P knocked off No. 4 Arlington on Tuesday, 2-1, and Monroe beat No. 8 Snohomish, 11-8. That means Arlington and Snohomish are among the four teams battling for the WesCo #3 spot. Kamiak and Cascade ar the others. And that survivor isn’t guaranteed of a state berth either. That team places the No. 3 KingCo qualifier in a loser-out, winner-to-state game on Saturday.

The Northwest 3A District Tournament has played to form as No. 5 Sedro-Woolley meets No. 6 Everett for the title Saturday, with a state berth on the line. Meadowdale, Glacier Peak, Shorecrest and Mountlake Terrace are still alive in the consolation bracket. Only two state berths are available.

In the KingCo 4A Tournament, Bothell and Newport play today for a state berth and the chance to play No. 1 Woodinville for the title. The loser will be in the mix for that KingCo 3A seed along with Issaquah, Ballard and Inglemoor.Read more…

Redmond athletic director John Appelgate announced Wednesday that boys basketball coach Jeff Larson has been hired as the school’s associate principal.

Larson’s new position requires that he step down as the Mustangs’ head coach. Over the past eight years, Larson compiled a 95-93 record at Redmond, taking the team to the state tournament twice.

Interested applicants for the open coaching position can apply online at www.lwsd.org and forward a resume and cover letter to Appelgate at jappelgate@lwsd.org

It should be a great week of high-school softball and I want to make sure you can find the brackets you are interested in.

Many of them have links. I could not find the KingCo 4A tournament bracket online, so am posting it a different way. I’m also posting the Sea-King 3A tournament bracket because it is in a similar formant. Then I’ll follow with the links to the other area tournaments.

Congratulations to top-ranked Woodinville, which beat Newport Monday, 8-1, to clinch a state berth. The Falcons are now seeding into the championship game of the KingCo tourney, set for Thursday. The top two teams automatically qualify for state and the No. 3 finisher will play the No. 3 WesCo team for a third and final berth.

There is only one unbeaten and untied high-school boys soccer team in the “big-school” ranks of Class 4A and 3A.

The Shorewood Thunderbirds, ranked No. 1 in 3A, will wear the biggest target when the state playoffs begin Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

The T-birds, coached by second-year man Nathan Davis, are deserving favorites with the season-long dominance at 19-0-0. Shorewood has posted 17 shutouts and outscored opponents a whopping 62-3.

Now, can the T-birds live pressure of being expected to land in the 3A championship match on May 26 at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Shorewood is looking to bring home its first state title in boys soccer since it won the 4A crown (then AAA) in 1978.

There are three unbeaten left in the 4A and 3A ranks with Shorewood leading the way. Snohomish (17-0-1) tops the 4A rankings and Central Kitsap (14-0-2) checks in No. 2 in 4A.

Shorewood opens the 3A state tournament on Wednesday by hosting seventh-ranked Chief Sealth (14-2-1) at Shoreline Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Top-ranked Snohomish, which has outscored foes 67-10, kicks off 4A state action by hosting third-ranked and traditional power Bellarmine Prep (12-1-2) on Wednesday.

No. 2 Central Kitsap hosts Tahoma (12-5-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Silverdale Stadium.

There are two other first-round matchups involving two ranked teams:

Class 4A – No. 3 Eastmont of East Wenatchee (17-2-0) hosts No. 8 Peninsula (14-4-0) on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Apple Bowl.

Class 3A – No. 8 Central Valley of Spokane (11-3-0) entertains No. 9 Emerald Ridge (14-2-2) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Central Valley High School.

The current ESPN HS Powerade Fab 50 team rankings still include five teams from the state of Washington in the Week 9 rankings. Snohomish (4A) stayed at No. 6, Central Kitsap (4A) moved up from No. 29 to No. 26, Shorewood (3A) went from No. 34 to No. 32, Cheney (2A) remained at No. 33 and Bellarmine Prep (4A) dropped from No. 28 to No. 49 in the Top 50. Listed below is the link to the rankings:
