Describes motivation process for creativity with emphasis on intrinsic motivation by Corey K Katir

Manu Ginobili broke out of his shooting slump with 17 points to lead the Spurs to an 87-81 victory over the Jazz on Monday night and a sweep of their first-round Western Conference series.

The San Antonio Spurs had just taken Game 1, and Manu Ginobili didn’t want to hear another word about winning 15 in a row or not losing in more than a month.

Unknown CBA situation not stopping King from search

billy-king-new-jersey-nets-0420.jpg.JPGNets GM Billy King is working with a low-level first-round pick (No. 27) as well as a high second.

The Nets own the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round pick, which is 27th overall, and they own their own second-round pick, which will either be 35th or 36th overall.

So most of the 22 players who worked out at the second day of the Nets’ New Jersey Draft Combine Sunday at the Nets’ practice facility were not household names.

According to Nets GM Billy King, however, that doesn’t mean one or more of them won’t end up being important players in the NBA at some point.

“You can get a player,’’ King said. “Sometimes you can get guys late in the first that were just overlooked. You can use all types of examples — Tony Parker was 29 (overall), (Manu) Ginobili was late in the second round. Gilbert Arenas (was a second-round pick).’’

To that end, King said the weekend combine, in which a total of 44 players came to East Rutherford over two days to play five-on-five against one another, was a necessary “part of the process’’ in identifying potential draft picks.

“You use their college season; you use workouts like this; you use their testing from pre-draft camp; you use their background check, their psych testing — this is just part of the process that we use to gather information to make a decision,’’ King said.

King said the team puts a lot of emphasis on the psychological testing and background checks of the potential draftees because it is important to know what type of person a player is.

“If you’re drafting late, basketball wise you know (what a player can do) but you want to know what type of people you’re bringing in because that could be the factor of them making it or not making it,’’ he said. “If their personality or character is flawed, skill-wise they may not even make it but a kid who is less talented but has great character is going to work harder with a chance to make it.’’

King said the impending NBA lockout, and the need to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players is not stopping him from mapping out his offseason plans for the team.

“You identify guys you like. And then, when the time comes about and you know the rules, and that’ll dictate what you can afford to pay them,’’ he said. “Fortunately for us, regardless, we’re going to have (salary cap) room.’’

NOTES:

Scotch Plains native Ashton Gibbs, who attended Saturday’s session, announced late Saturday that he has decided to withdraw from the draft and return to Pitt for his senior season.

Among the familiar names working out today were: Ralph Sampson III (son of former NBA player Ralph Sampson), Jerai Grant (son of former NBA player Harvey Grant), Xavier Silas (son of former ABA and NBA player James Silas) and Mustapha Farrakhan (grandson of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan).

LOS ANGELES a Nothing was going to rattle the calm, cool and collected Spurs. Not even a 24-point deficit.

Tim Duncan scored 19 points, helping engineer a defining 24-0 run in the third quarter, and San Antonio defeated the Clippers 96-86 yesterday to take a commanding 3-0 lead in their second-round playoff series.

aWe didnat plan on being down that much,a said Duncan, who at 36 is hungry to win the teamas fifth NBA championship and first since 2006-07. aWe stuck with it.a

Led by Tony Parkeras 23 points and his defense on an ailing Chris Paul, the Spurs kept running their plays even as Blake Griffinas early offensive assault buried them in a huge hole. Griffin missed three shots in the first half, when he scored 20 points and carried his team to a 24-point lead despite a left hip injury and a sprained right knee.

aThey came out like we expected, very strong. Blake was making crazy shots,a Parker said. aWe just took our time. Itas a long game, a very long game. At halftime, we were very calm.a

Griffin had 28 points and 16 rebounds, and reserve Mo Williams added 19 points for the Clippers, who face some daunting NBA history heading into Game 4 today at Staples Center. No team has rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

aIf we donat play with that sense of urgency, itas not going to be pretty,a Griffin said.

The Clippers played a must-win Game 7 in the opening round on the road at Memphis and succeeded.

Rookie Kawhi Leonard added 14 points and Manu Ginobili 13 to help the top-seeded Spurs win their 17th in a row and improve to 7-0 in the playoffs.

aWe all struggled in the first quarter. We didnat feel right out there,a said Duncan, who like his teammates, looked to Parker to pick the team up.

aHe stuck with it, made some big shots down the stretch and continued to attack,a Duncan said.

GAME 4 MAY BE DELAYED

The Clippers and Spurs will play a Game 4 tonight, but itas just not clear when. Thatas because there is a time crunch at the Staples Center, which also is holding a Game 4 of the Kings-Coyotes NHL Western Conference finals at 3:30 p.m. The Kings are up 3-0 in that series.

The NBA Western Conference semifinals series is scheduled to be played tonight at 10:30 p.m., but could be delayed until tomorrow due to a scheduling conflict with an NHL playoff game between the Kings and Coyotes, also scheduled for today, according to an ESPNLosAngeles.com report.

The Clippers and Spurs game would be moved to tomorrow at 7 p.m. if the hockey game goes multiple overtime periods and delays the start of the NBA game too much, an NBA spokesman told the website.
